The Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) is set to conduct a livestock census to obtain reliable and updated information on livestock numbers, products and production systems in Kano State.
State Project Coordinator, Malam Ibrahim Garba Muhammad made this known when he received the National Project Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Mrs. Winnie Lai-Solarin recently in his office.
Muhammad pointed that the livestock survey was very important because it will provide the much-needed data for the formulation and implementation of the livestock productivity enhancement component of the KSADP in the state.
He explained that the exercise would also seek the support of the Dakar-based financial and management consulting firm, Africa Consulting and Trading (ACT Afrique Group) to conduct a thorough job.
Underscoring the importance of livestock, Muhammad said that it plays a very important role in agriculture in this part of the country adding that it was unfortunate that the available data on livestock was obsolete and unreliable.
“We, therefore, need accurate information and statistics to guide us on the design and implementation of our livestock productivity and enhancement initiatives,” he stressed.
In her remarks, the National Project Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Mrs. Winnie Lai-Solarin, explained that the meeting was convened to initiate a partnership with KSADP in the areas of pasture development, artificial insemination, milk collection and training of pastoralists.
She added that it would create an innovative platform that will facilitate synergy between projects concerned with livestock development
The development, according to the L-PRES coordinator, would help to ensure project sustainability and avoidance of duplicity as well as wastage of resources.
Lai-Solarin also appealed to the KSADP Project Management Unit to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to achieve desired results.
