Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mohammad Abubakar has said that agriculture remains the best business to venture into because the government is always willing to provide interventions.
Abubakar called on Nigerians to embrace agriculture to improve the economy.
The minister made this call on Saturday, the second day of his familiarisation tour of some Agricultural facilities in Kaduna.
It was gathered that the Agric Minister on Friday (first day of the tour) visited among others, the Bank of Agriculture, Federal Cooperative College, National Fertiliser Development Centre, and the National Soil and Water Testing Centre.
Also, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Storehouse, School of Pest Control and the Ministry’s North-west Zonal office were visited.
Abubakar however tasked farmers to always utilize and repay the government’s financial interventions whenever they were doled out to benefit farmers.
This, he said, would make such interventions revolving and continuous.
The minister also noted various challenges daunting the agriculture sector, adding that the practice of hoarding farm inputs needs to stop.
He said, “I have seen equipment in the stores that should have been distributed to end users instead of being laid fallow and left to decay.
“We cannot let situations like this continue to happen because we do not want to hurt anybody. These people benefiting from hoarding equipment and agricultural inputs are hurting a lot of farmers and the economy of the country.
“So I am not afraid to do what is right and we will do what is right to change some of the narratives of hoarding agricultural inputs while showing the people that the government is doing its best to improve the lives of Nigerians.
“I am undergoing this familiarization tour to ensure that the agric sector performs its best as agriculture is the backbone of any country’s economy so we are going to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure we get the best”
