Allocate Lands for Ranching, Presidency Tells State Governors

The Presidency has urged state Governors across the country to make lands available for ranching in a bid to provide a lasting solution to the spate of farmer/herder clashes.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, made the appeal in Abuja while responding to an editorial of London-based The Economist

The Economist had reported that economic hardship and spiralling food prices were fuelling the current insecurity in Nigeria and have made life more difficult for its citizens.

Reacting to the publication, the presidential spokesman asserted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was the only government of Nigeria which has ever sought a solution to the centuries-old herder-farmer disputes.

“The federal ranches programme, launched shortly after the President’s re-election is the first of its kind – and it is working: during the last 12 months, clashes have significantly reduced.

“The government now calls on State governors to have the imagination to join forces with the Federal administration and expand this programme by making available state lands for those interested, now that its effectiveness has been demonstrated,” Shehu added.
