Food Sufficiency: Nigerian Govt Restates Commitment to Industrialise Agric Sector

The Federal Government has said it will industrialise agriculture, scale-up productivity levels and ensure value addition in local and international markets.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar made the disclosure at the maiden edition of the National Agribusiness Stakeholders’ and Investment Summit in Abuja, on Tuesday.

According to him, the agriculture sector has risen beyond being seen as a survival venture to a real business, therefore, should be invested in.

“Government is committed to industrialising the agricultural sector for increased productivity, efficiency and competitiveness across Local and International markets.

“Agriculture is now being acknowledged and promoted as a business and not a development program away from the primordial perspective and able to sufficiently satisfy the socio-economic needs of its practitioners and grow the nation’s economy.

“Our agenda is to guarantee the vibrancy of the sector; agriculture must be seen as a business and haven for investment. We are integrating food production, storage, food processing and industrial manufacturing to establish the linkages necessary in the agricultural commodity value chain,” he said.

He stated that the issue of industrialisation was a step towards actualising self-sufficiency in food production.

On food sufficiency, the Minister noted that Nigeria has been leading globally in the production of key staples like yam, cassava, maize, rice and palm oil, in the last three years.

He said, “It is remarkable that in the past three years Nigeria has taken a leading role globally in cassava, yam, maize, palm oil and rice production.”
